OSTEOARTHRITIS - GLA:D CANADA

What is Osteoarthritis?
Osteoarthritis (OA) is a common disease that primarily affects articular cartilage, though the entire joint becomes compromised over time. OA most commonly occurs in weight-bearing joints such as the hips and knees, but it can also affect other joints including the hands and spine. It is the most common lifestyle-related disease in people over 65 years of age.
Symptoms of Osteoarthritis
Symptoms typically progress over years but can have either a sudden or gradual onset:
- Joint pain: Particularly noticeable in weight-bearing joints like the hips and knees
- Morning stiffness: Joints feel stiff and difficult to move upon waking
- Reduced range of motion: Joints become less flexible and harder to move through their full range
- Swelling: May occur around affected joints
What is GLA:D Canada?
GLA:D™ Canada is an 8-week education and exercise program designed for individuals with stiff and/or painful knees and/or hips, or those diagnosed with knee and/or hip osteoarthritis.
Research from GLAD® in Denmark shows that participants report:
- Less pain
- Reduced use of pain medications
- Fewer individuals taking sick leave
- Increased physical activity levels

The GLA:D Canada Program Plan
- 2-3 Education Sessions: Education plays a vital role in the GLA:D program, empowering participants with the knowledge and skills to manage their condition effectively. Through informative sessions, participants learn about the underlying causes of arthritis, pain management techniques, joint protection strategies, and the importance of physical activity in maintaining joint health.
- 12 Exercise Sessions: Sixty-minute group exercise sessions twice a week for 6 weeks, led by a certified physiotherapist. The GLA:D program includes structured exercise sessions that focus on strengthening muscles around the hip and knee joints, improving stability, and enhancing mobility. These exercises are evidence-based and tailored to address the unique needs of individuals with arthritis.
- Data Collection: Ongoing monitoring to track your progress throughout the program.
